5 Fun and Uncommon Holidays to Celebrate

While just about everyone on the planet knows about classic holidays like Valentine’s Day, Easter, Hanukkah and Christmas, there are hundreds more holidays that barely make a blip on our celebratory maps.

Because every day deserves a celebration of some sort, here is a sampling of some of these uncommon and wacky holidays:

International Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day

Now this is a holiday most people can get behind. Whether you are old, young or in-between, celebrate this delicious holiday on the first Saturday in February. If you have kiddos, tell them about the special day when they got home from school the Friday before, and take them to the store to pick out which flavors and toppings they want. International Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is a terrific way to celebrate mid-winter when it seems like the cold weather will never end.

Alfred Hitchcock Day

March 12 is National Alfred Hitchcock Day, which is a day devoted to celebrating the life and work of the famed filmmaker. While it is not his birthday or date of death, it’s a great opportunity to honor the man who directed over 50 films. Rent or buy a copy of “Rear Window,” “Vertigo” and “The Birds,” and settle down on the couch for an amazing evening of some of the most classic movies ever. Since Hitchcock usually made a cameo appearance in his movies, have a contest to see who can spot him first.

Pi Day

March 14 is Pi Day because when it is written numerically, it looks like the first three digits of pi (3.14). If you are a math buff, spend the day reading about one of the oldest and most recognizable mathematical constants. Another, more delicious way to celebrate Pi Day is by eating plenty of pie.

You can even host a Pi Day party. Ask your guests to recite as many digits of pi as they can, and reward the winner with a homemade pie to take home.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

This holiday, celebrated yearly on April 2, is all about the simple-yet-scrumptious PB&J sandwich. If your family adores peanut butter and jelly, come up with ways to add these fillings into each meal. For example, slather them onto pancakes instead of butter and syrup at breakfast, and serve it on crackers or a bagel at lunch. If you have a blender, make your own peanut butter with roasted peanuts and make jelly from scratch.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

On September 19, you have a perfect excuse to channel your inner pirate and talk like one all day. As the official Talk Like a Pirate website notes, comedian Dave Barry’s mention of the day managed to transform the holiday from a silly idea celebrated by a few friends to a phenomenon enjoyed by many. Strap a stuffed parrot to yer shoulder, rent some Captain Jack Sparrow movies and enjoy a shot or two of Captain Morgan Cannon Blast (a spiced rum that will surely shiver ye timbers).
