Entertaining Etiquette: What to Ask Guests to Bring

One of the kindest gestures a guest can offer is to ask, “Can I bring anything?” It’s a small question, but it shows that your guest wants to be involved in the excitement and planning of the party.

As a host, if you could use the help, it’s perfectly appropriate to suggest something for your guest to bring. Not only does it help lighten your load, but it also allows your guests to feel included and more connected to the event.

If you choose to accept a guest’s offer, here are some thoughtful tips for what to ask them to bring:

Their favorite beverage

This is a win-win: it ensures guests have something they enjoy drinking, especially if it’s something you may not have stocked. Beverages are often bulky and heavy, so having guests bring their own can also ease your shopping list. If unopened, they store easily for future use.

A dish that can be made ahead of time

The last thing you want is a guest tied up in your kitchen during the party. Ask for something that doesn’t require last-minute prep or heating. This keeps your kitchen clean and allows the guest to mingle and enjoy the party instead of working to prepare something.

Something they love to make or pick up

When a guest brings a favorite recipe or a go-to dish from a local spot, it comes with a sense of pride and ease. For example, my friend Ted makes an amazing casserole, I always ask him to bring it, and he’s thrilled to share it.

Flowers from their yard

Need help with decor, flowers are easy and festive. For those creative guests, ask them to bring some cut flowers from their yard. They will enjoy helping, and it’s easy and economical for them.

Nothing

That said, it’s also completely fine to politely decline a guest’s offer and let them arrive empty-handed. Sometimes, that makes things simpler for everyone, and your guest gets to relax from the moment they walk in the door.

Whether you accept the offer or not, the key is to make it easy, thoughtful, and inclusive, just like any good gathering should be.
