WHO WE ARE The Washington Studio School is a 501c(3) nonprofit arts organization established in 1985 which offers classes in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture to adults and high-school teens of all levels. Founded through the efforts of Lee Newman and Joey Kossow, WSS is dedicated to the standards of a perceptual fine arts tradition and its relevance to the present. We provide a community of learning through lecture series, critique sessions, gallery exhibits, and a library. Our curriculum provides a spirited, rigorous course of study, and offers teen summer programs, resident and guest artist lectures and workshops, a certificate program competitive with a MFA, studio space in the Atelier for working artists and students, and a community home for artistic events in and around Washington, DC. Our emphasis is on learning by doing and on personal attention. True to the best traditions in visual art, we teach what it is to see and to relate to the present.

IMG_5706PURPOSE To teach skills of observation, critical analysis, and material techniques; to encourage the use of these skills and techniques in expressing a personal vision through work that is made by the artist's hand; to provide a warm and engaging environment for artists at every stage of their development and career; to be a focal point for artists, critics, and art historians who maintain the living tradition of studio art; and to communicate the importance and continuing relevance of studio-based art.
